Last weekend the Penny Arcade Expo(PAX)offered a demo that many would call “retro”. While a lot of us still dream about the one liners that Gauntlet made famous, including my favorite “Blue Valkyrie needs food badly!”, those dreams are about to become reality once again!
Gauntlet is coming home to your DS, due to release this Fall!
Designed by Backbone, they recreate the classic look and feel of the original action game Gauntlet, they also include some of the original sound files. A perfect fit for the DS, and a great portable game for everyone.
Many we’re able to play this game demo at PAX this previous weekend, and while they seemed to fall back in love with this retro action game, one concern kept arising; the controls. Although this isn’t completely Backbone’s fault, it’s mostly because the game plays on the DS using the D-pad. For one gamer he longed for the joy-stick again “The controls felt a bit mushy and having to turn to take on an opponent, especially with the elf, could be frustrating at times. I longed, while playing the game, to have a joystick to fine-tune my shots with.” said Brian Crecente over at Kotaku.
Fortunately the game makes up for it’s lack of a joy stick in more than one ways! With is Multi-player features including both cooperative and competitive multi-play. No more remembering codes, the DS version uses its own servers supporting up to four players and in game voice chat! The campaign also includes 40 maps in three realms.
Get your game face and elf ears on! This competitive game play includes ranked death match, team death match, and treasure hoard mode played on over 16 different maps!
This DS game is a big must have for old and new Gauntlet fans alike! I know I for one am way excited to buy it! ![]()

Oh my god I love Gauntlet SOOO much … Damn my PS2 for not playing cd-based games anymore! GRRRR.
(It’s not funny, but friend got me addicted to Dark Legacy and now I loathe him because I can’t play it on my PS2, yet love him for introducing me to it. Eh, it was more fun playing it with him, anyway. XD )

Sweet. I will have to get this when it comes out. I love the play and feel of the old series, so this is pretty freaking sweet.

Yeah but I don’t think I’d like it without the joystick … It does sound kind of laborious with just the D-pad.
