A community of men & women who embody the next generation of pop culture
You know, I never knew there was a Video Game Guinness World Records, that’s awesome and more power to those who are in it (our good friend Tommy Tallarico has an entire 2 page spread in the book!). NextGen.biz featured the top 50 moments in gaming, some of them were kinda boring, so I took it, shook it up (but did not stir it) and now I present to you, in no particular order, the Top 15 Gamer Guinness World Records!!
1. Largest Collection of Playable Game Systems:
This one is crazy, some guy named René Meyer has 274 working gaming systems! What the?! And here I was thinking my collection of 16 was impressive!
2. First Female Head of a Game Studio:
This is for all the girl power ladies out there…her name is Mie Kumagai and she is the head of research and development at Sega’s Amusement Software labs. She oversaw development on some of your favorite Sega games like Crazy Taxi, and Virtual Tennis.

3. World’s Youngest Pro Gamer:
This little guy was born in 1998, his name is LiL Poison and he can take you down in some competitive gaming. He was only 4 when he competed for the first time and then was signed with MLG when he was 6! He even has a documentary all about him coming out this year! Now I know he kicks ass and all, but I was there when he played my boyfriend at GDC one year, and I gotta say, this kid is a screen watcher…he watches your screen to see where you are and what you are doing. I know it’s not technically cheating…but come on, I expected more.

4. Best Selling System of all Time:
No surprise here, it’s the PS2. As of November 2007, Sony had sold over 120 million systems! Holy crap. Now sure if it will stand up to the Wii tho…only time will tell.
5. Largest Console:
And the award for most unneeded waste of too much space goes to none other than the Xbox. Didn’t see that coming, did you.
Yep, the original Xbox was one heavy sonofa, it measured in at 320 x 100 x 260mm, and could crack open your skull if it fell on you.
6. Highest Rated Game of all Time:
Good old trusty, gold mine…Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. The reviews and gamers loved this one and gave it outstanding reviews, it is also the best selling game in the Zelda series.

7. Highest Grossing Game in One Day:
Big shocker here, Halo 3, bringing in $170 million in only it’s first day in sales. Boy, the fanboys were out in numbers that night. Even with it’s record breaking release night numbers, sales quickly died down and Halo didn’t even come in close to the best selling game slot…that title goes to:
8. Best Selling Game (including bundle sales):
Super Mario Bros. for the original NES, selling over 40.2 million copies. Super Mario Bros changed the face of gaming as we knew it, the game ushered in a new generation of gaming and it has held that timelessness throughout the years.
9. Best Selling Game (excluding bundle sales):
Coming next with best selling game without bundle sales is yet another forever favorite, Super Mario Bros. 3 (my personal favorite). Being never bundled with a console, Super Mario Bros. 3 has sold over 17.2 million copies on it’s own! Eat that Halo!
10. Best Selling Game Series Ever:
Easy guess with the two above record breakers; it’s the Super Mario series. Take a look at these stats: the series has sold over 145 million copies, 7 of the 20 best selling console titles ever belong to Mario titles, and each of the 7 best titles have sold over 10 million copies. That’s some huge numbers! Which is why we have our next award going to:
11. Most Prolific Character:
Mario! Being in 116 titles, and 13 of those were in 2005 alone, Mario is the most loved video game character. He is like the Mickey Mouse of the gaming world. Who doesn’t love Mario?! His laugh, his voice, the sound he makes when he jumps…all these sounds are recognized around the world by gamers and even non-gamers.

12. Highest Production Budget:
Shenmue…who would have guessed? Shenmue was an awesome game with endless options, you could even go into a convenient store and play the lotto! Shenmue cost a breath taking $70,000,000 and 7 years to complete. I wonder how much they lost in sales.
13. Most Ported Game:
Ever so popular, Tetris, of course. This oh so simple puzzle game has been ported to 55 different gaming platforms! Whoa, you people sure like your Tetris! Which smoothly transitions into our next topic:

14. Longest Prison Sentence for Playing a Video Game:
Poor bastard, Faiz Chopdat from the England didn’t listen to the stewardess when asked to put away his cell phone while on a plane and was caught playing Tetris (yep here’s that game again). He was asked twice to put away the game but after he still wasn’t listening he was arrested at touch down. He served 4 months for “endangering the safety of an aircraft”. Who knew Tetris could be so dangerous!
15. Longest Metal Gear Cutscene:
We have all sat through painfully long cutscenes, silly developers thinking that we wanna watch our video game instead of play it. Metal Gear is notorious for this (so is Final Fantasy, but we aren’t talking about that game right now) and the longest Metal Gear cutscene drags on for a whole 15mins and 17 seconds! That’s when I would be praying for a “skip” option.
Well, congrats and thank you for sitting through my Top 15 Gamer Guinness World Records! I hope you enjoyed it thoroughly. I think there should be a world record for “Amount of Tries to Beat an Incredibly Hard Boss”, that award would go to me for my endless efforts to beat RAMM on insane mode in Gears of War. After hours and hours of trying and almost losing my voice from screaming profanities, I finally beat him and all is well.
What are a few world records you think you have or could beat?

Yo Ray-Ray!,
Thanks for the mention. It was pretty cool and quite the honor to be notified by Guinness about my inclusion into the book this year.
If any of your readers is interested in checking out the interview they did for the article they can view it here on the Guinness website: http://gamers.guinnessworldrecords.com/records.aspx
Thanks!

First, congrats to you, Tommy. 275 and counting, huh. Pretty amazing and creative brain you got there.
Raychul, awesome list. Never knew about the longest sentence served one.
The Xbox was the largest Console? I don’t know about that one. Maybe the heaviest, but I’m pretty sure the Atari 5200 was largest console ever.

Heck the Atari5200 trackball controller was larger than the Xbox hehe

The problem is most of the people or gamers who make these records are under 25 and think Video Games started when the NES came out. No sense for the true history of gaming. It’s a shame.
