Miyazaki has done it again! With his new movie Gake no ue no Ponyo, Miyazaki is pushing the animators and voice actors’ abilities in this new movie where 75% of the movie is under water. Drawing characters and voicing them under the sea is no easy task, but if Disney can do it, Studio Ghibli can do it. The story is about a five year old boy named Sosuke and the goldfish Princess named Ponyo. She is trying to become a human when Sosuke and her meet.

The movie was released in Japan this month and has been getting good reviews. Many critics are saying that is very simplistic and was made more for and from the view of young children, much like My Neighbor Totoro. An interesting change from Hayao’s other movies is that this film does not contain any computer generated imagery (CGI). There isn’t else much more information about the film’s story or message., so we will have to watch it for ourselves. No date has been released US yet, but hopefully we can snatch it up when it comes to DVD in Japan and watch it with subtitles. Check out the screen shoots below to get a better idea of the film.

Sweet! I really want to see this. I still haven’t seen Howl’s Moving Castle either…I should probably do that soon? :-p
My favorite one he’s done will always be Porco Rosso. I dunno, just something about that movie that I love like crazy!

Have you see Whisper of the Heart and the Cat Returns? They kinda go hand in hand. And personally, Whisper of the Heart is one of my favorites. It’s really different than Miyazakis other films, it’s more of a slice of life film, rather than magical. But if you haven’t seen it, definitely check it out!
