A community of men & women who embody the next generation of pop culture
There is perhaps nothing girlier in the entire Va-Jay-Jay universe as “Lolita”.
Classic Lolita, Elegant Gothic Lolita, Sweet Lolita, and Punk Lolita are all forms of an insanely popular and ornate sub-culture style of fashion that began in Japan around 1999.
But WTF is it?
Lolita style is mostly influenced by Victorian children’s clothing and costumes from the Rococo period. Rococo was a style of 18th century French art that was well known for ornate designs and elegant style. The Japanese harajuku scene is filled with girls dressed in Lolita fashion and have become quite a craze over here in the U.S.
There are many types of Lolita from sweet and innocent to dark and brooding. The style tends to accentuate youth and the innocence of children by adding over-sized shoes, little dolls, teddy bears, parasols, and tiny hats to the look.
A great example of Sweet Lolita. Notice the odd stares from behind!
Japanese musician and fashion designer, Mana has had a large influence on the Lolita culture. He operates his own clothing line out of Hiroshima, Japan as well as CDJapan.com and models most of his own designs.
That is the prettiest man I’ve ever seen.
Accessories play a huge role in pulling off a successful Lolita look. Notice the parasol, the thigh high stockings, the chunky purse, the lace gloves, the over-sized bonnet, the tall shoes, it all goes into the look of appearing as a very little girl.
For the girl on the edgier side of life, the Punk Lolita!
For the more sophisticated Japanese look, the Kimono style Lolita! I love the “confused puppy” expression.
Even Hello Kitty’s gotten in on the action!
The rational part of me screams in horror at all the lace, frills, and layers that make up this incredibly girly look. But the estrogen in me screams “DO WANT!”. So I’ve finally found a solution to my Lolita-less closet.
I give you, SWEET ROCOCO.COM!
Not only can you customize the style of your outfit, you can choose every inch of fabric that goes into it, the placement of bows, the shape of your skirt, your blouse, the accessories and beyond. It is insane.

This is one of the designs I came up with for myself. Now if I could only come up with the money…
SweetRococo.com is one of the best sites I’ve ever come across for Lolita style. The website is incredibly easy to navigate and you could have your closet filled with different designs in no time. The price is reasonable for how personable you can get with each outfit and from the About Us page on their site, you can tell your item is coming from a home that understands and loves the Lolita culture. I would wear any of their designs in a heartbeat.
But don’t tell the rational part of me I said that.
Please give SweetRococo.com some Lolita lovin’ won’t you?

I secretly love EGL, and I lurk on their LJ community. I keep wanting to make something EGL - but I never get around to it.
I know what you mean Jinxie, it’s kinda sick but you can’t ignore the cute.
Thank you for explaining, Ms.Naru! I knew of the fashion, have friends that go EGL all the time through New York, but never knew the history period it was from. The child-like look creeps me out a little.
But…that site…
I’ve customized five different outfits for me so far. D: Get me off of here! I don’t think I’ll ever wear a loli dress, though. I think pulling it off well has a lot to do with the body type and culture, neither of which I could emulate successfully.
